From Evidence to Financing: Innovative Approaches to Accelerate Access to Maternal and Newborn Health Commodities

Session Information

Progress in reducing maternal and newborn mortality has slowed despite the availability of proven, cost-effective interventions. A key barrier is not a lack of solutions, but persistent challenges in prioritizing, financing, procuring, and delivering essential maternal and newborn health commodities at scale. In many low- and middle-income countries, constrained fiscal space, foreign exchange volatility, and fragmented financing systems separate commodity procurement from broader health planning, contributing to delayed purchases, stock-outs, emergency procurement, and higher costs. At the same time, shifts in the global financing landscape are creating urgency to identify new approaches that can better prioritize high-impact commodities, mobilize domestic and multilateral resources, address short-term liquidity constraints, and link financing to health outcomes. This session will explore how emerging analytical tools and innovative financing mechanisms can work together to accelerate access to lifesaving maternal and newborn health commodities.
